At the start of this new year I thought it would be a good idea to set my 2022 writing goals. After all, success starts with setting goals.
Looking back on 2021, I am sorry to see that I did not accomplish everything I wanted to. I did, however achieve a small measure of success, and I intend to learn from the mistakes I made, so I can make new ones. Better ones.
In 2021 I did NOT publish a novel. Nor did I write another novel. I failed quite spectacularly at building a following. Sure, I’ve got a small following on Facebook and Instagram, but that’s not nearly enough. Worse, I’ve only got myself to blame here, as I have not been posting consistently – something I definitely intend to remedy in 2022. Hopefully, that should help.
I also failed at writing one poem a week, but on the upside, I did manage to publish a poetry collection, so I call that a win. And I’m going to simply try again in 2022. One poem a week is not too much. I just need more discipline.
The good news about the novel is: It’s almost ready for publication. I underestimated how much work goes into it, and how steep the learning curve was. Being an Indie author is not easy, especially when you can only afford to pay for the artwork and a professional proofreader, but have to do everything else by yourself. A few good beta readers are an absolute godsend here, but they’re not easy to find, and even with their feedback you still need to do a lot of self-editing – which isn’t nearly as easy as it sounds.
Having said all that, I have learnt a lot in 2021, and feel I’ll definitely be able to work faster in 2022. The goals I set myself for the new year are high, but not unrealistically so.
