Over the last week or two, I’ve been busy giving my website a large update and, although I think I’m making some nice progress, I’m not nearly done yet!
Why I decided on a website update
It all started with a Facebook rant of mine. I know, that’s not pretty, and I promise I don’t do that often, but sometimes my inner demon just gets the best of me. If I didn’t know better, I could swear I was human after all. 😉
Yet, my rant resonated with a lot of people and got far more engagement than any of my other posts. (As far as I can remember.) Ultimately, it resulted in one of my Facebook friends offering to have a professional look at my website and see if they found anything worth optimising. I’d have been a fool to refuse that offer, and since I’m no fool…
That’s how the adventure started.
This friend saw a lot that was already good, but also had a ton of really good advice on how to make my website even better! It would involve some writing and a lot of rearranging, but who cares? Writers write, and I became a writer because I absolutely love writing. Good thing I also like playing around with webdesign, or this would have been torture.
What I did so far
I changed my tagline to “Where Magic Meets Reality” to reflect the uniqueness of my writing more accurately. Because “Where the Magic Happens” might sound fun, but it’s quite cliché, and also too generic.
I made a new main banner with clear pictures of my published and soon-to-be-published books. I also settled on a new colour scheme, which fits the atmosphere of my writing better.
Next — and I admit I was a bit nervous about this, as a LOT could have gone wrong here! — I switched to a new theme, which allowed me to have a fixed menu and to add a social menu to my website as well. Because, let’s face it, social media are a must these days.
Thankfully, all went well, and I’m really happy with my new theme. (I’d been wanting to switch to a new theme for quite a while already, so this was the perfect opportunity to finally just do it.)
I did some rewriting, mainly on the home page, where I wrote a new intro, but also on some of the other pages.
I revamped my Newsletter Signup Form (do check it out! You’ll find it at the bottom of every page and every blog post), and started cleaning up my side bar and adding actually useful and interesting elements to it.
What I still need to do
First and foremost, I need to populate my sidebar with said useful and interesting content. I’m not spilling the beans yet, but my friend gave me some very good tips on what to put there, and I’m rather excited about it!
More rewriting needs to be done, both on the home page and on other pages.
I’ll also be adding previews of my books to their respective pages. In fact, I already added one to Night’s Reign‘s page, so you can start reading the book there to get a taste of my writing.
Images. Ideally, I’ll replace all images on my blog and pages to match my new design and colour scheme. That will take a while, so I’ll start by replacing the images on my pages, as those are probably the most important ones. With some luck, some images can stay, but if not… good thing I’m quite competent at creating graphics in Canva.
All in all, I think it will still be a few weeks before the website update is complete, so keep coming back to see how everything is progressing, and don’t be shy to leave a comment if you have any suggestions.
I’d love to hear from you!
