Who I am

This website is operated by Daan Katz, an independent author.

If you contact me through this website, subscribe to my newsletter, or otherwise provide personal information, I will handle that information in accordance with this privacy policy and applicable data-protection law, including the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

What personal information I collect

The information I collect depends on how you use the website.

Newsletter subscriptions

If you subscribe to my newsletter, I collect the information you provide, normally your email address and, if you choose to provide it, your name.

I use this information to send you my newsletter, information about my books and writing, and other content that you have agreed to receive.

My newsletter is managed and delivered using EmailOctopus. When you subscribe through my website, your information is also processed by BookFunnel, which handles delivery of reader magnets and passes your subscription information to my mailing list.

You can unsubscribe from my newsletter at any time using the unsubscribe link included in every marketing email.

Contact forms

If you contact me through a contact form, I collect the information you provide in that form, which may include your name, email address, and the contents of your message.

I use this information only to respond to your enquiry and for related correspondence.

Comments

If you leave a comment on this website, WordPress collects the information you enter in the comments form, together with your IP address and browser user-agent information. This is used, among other things, to help detect spam.

An anonymised string created from your email address (a hash) may be sent to Gravatar, a service operated by Automattic, to determine whether you have a Gravatar profile. If your comment is approved, your profile picture may be visible publicly alongside your comment.

Embedded content

Some pages on this website contain embedded content from other websites, including YouTube and Spotify.

Embedded content behaves much like visiting those services directly. These services may collect information about your browser or device and may use cookies or similar technologies.

YouTube

I embed videos hosted by YouTube. When a YouTube video is loaded or used, YouTube may collect information about your interaction with the video and about your device or browser.

Spotify

I sometimes embed music and other content from Spotify. Spotify’s embedded players may use cookies and similar technologies and may collect information about your interaction with the embedded content.

My bookshop

I use Payhip to operate my online bookshop.

If you purchase something through my bookshop, Payhip processes the information necessary to complete your purchase and provide its services. Payhip may also process payment information and other information associated with your transaction.

This website does not use cookies for advertising or Google Analytics tracking.

Some essential website functions may use cookies or similar technologies. Third-party services embedded in the website, such as YouTube and Spotify, may also use their own cookies or similar technologies.

My website uses the GDPR Cookie Compliance plugin to manage cookie consent where consent is required.

Google Analytics

I currently do not use Google Analytics to track visitors to this website.

I have a Google Analytics property connected to Rank Math for reporting purposes, but Google Analytics tracking code is not installed on this website.

How I use your information

I use personal information only where necessary for purposes such as:

responding to enquiries;
managing newsletter subscriptions and sending emails you have requested;
delivering reader magnets and other materials you have requested;
processing purchases through my bookshop;
managing and moderating website comments;
preventing spam and abuse;

I do not sell your personal information.

I do not share your personal information with third parties for their own marketing purposes.

Some services I use, such as EmailOctopus, BookFunnel, Payhip, YouTube, Spotify, and Gravatar, necessarily process certain information in order to provide their services. Their own privacy policies explain how they handle that information.

How long I keep your information

I keep personal information only for as long as it is reasonably necessary for the purpose for which it was collected, or for as long as I am legally required to keep it.

Newsletter information is retained while you remain subscribed. If you unsubscribe, I will no longer use your address to send you marketing emails, although some information may be retained where necessary to maintain suppression records or comply with legal obligations.

Comments and their associated metadata may be retained for as long as the comment remains on the website.

Correspondence is retained for as long as reasonably necessary to deal with the enquiry and maintain an appropriate record of the communication.

Your rights

Under the GDPR, you may have the right to:

ask what personal information I hold about you;
request a copy of that information;
ask me to correct inaccurate information;
ask me to delete your information;
ask me to restrict how I process your information;
object to certain forms of processing;
withdraw consent where processing is based on your consent;

Where your information is processed

Some of the services I use are provided by companies based outside the European Economic Area (EEA).
